Academic Programs

The Coast Guard Academy offers nine Bachelor of Science majors designed to prepare officers for leadership in the modern Coast Guard. All programs emphasize critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills alongside technical expertise.

Engineering Majors

Civil Engineering

Design and maintain the infrastructure that supports Coast Guard operations. Courses cover structures, environmental engineering, coastal engineering, and project management. Graduates often serve in facilities engineering and shore infrastructure roles.

Electrical Engineering

Focus on electronics, communications, and control systems. Coursework includes circuits, signals, electromagnetics, and computer engineering. Ideal preparation for electronics and communications positions.

Mechanical Engineering

Study thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials, and machine design. Strong preparation for engineering duty aboard cutters and at maintenance facilities. Many graduates serve as engineering officers.

Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering

One of only a few undergraduate programs in the nation. Design ships, analyze vessel performance, and understand marine systems. Graduates are invaluable in acquisitions, marine safety, and vessel operations.

Cyber Systems

The newest major addresses growing cyber threats. Combines computer science, networking, and security with practical applications for Coast Guard missions. Graduates are prepared for critical cyber defense roles.

Science & Mathematics

Operations Research & Computer Analysis

Apply mathematical modeling and data analysis to optimize Coast Guard operations. Coursework includes statistics, programming, simulation, and decision science. Excellent preparation for resource management.

Marine & Environmental Sciences

Study oceanography, marine biology, chemistry, and environmental science. Perfect preparation for environmental response, living marine resources, and scientific research missions.

Humanities & Social Sciences

Government

Examine political science, international relations, and law. Develops understanding of policy, diplomacy, and governance essential for Coast Guard leadership and interagency operations.

Management

Build foundation in organizational behavior, economics, and leadership. Develops skills in resource management, personnel leadership, and strategic planning.

The Academy is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education. Engineering programs are accredited by ABET, and Management is accredited by AACSB.
